Camping BBQ: The Cobb
So in 2019 we’d started to get into camping. We’d been going for years, every year, to ‘The Big Feastival’ – which is a 3 day food festival, originally run by or in conjunction with Jamie Oliver. It’s where I’d first tasted some of the most amazing brisket, and got hooked on it, which is why you’ll see 99% of the posts on this blog being brisket related.
Anyway… we’d always had a decent tent (for those that are interested, a Kampa Hayling 6 Air) and as we got into camping, and I love BBQ’ing, it only made sense to get a decent camping BBQ.
I planned to spend AGES looking through every single possible iteration of camping BBQ, but suddenly found myself days away from going camping and – no BBQ.
I think I ended up taking a last minute trip to GoOutdoors, and they had one Cobb Pro BBQ left in their portable BBQ section. It meant I didn’t get to look at the Smokey Joe, the Weber Go Anywhere, or any of the alternatives.
I grabbed it, and just hoped it was decent. I had no idea. Well, I got a couple of add ons for it, including a ‘wok’ style pan, and a grill – although in my opinion the Teflon one that came with it was better:
Well… “out in the field” – it was amazing…
I have to say, I absolutely LOVE this little BBQ. First and foremost, it was absolutely the perfect size for camping. One of the absolute first class things about this is – it doesn’t get hot underneath. Which at first… I didn’t believe. I thought there was no way that was true. You can see it’s on bricks there. But you can even pick it up whilst it’s cooking and it’s not hot (if you use it right…!)
As you can see here, it’s got a little charcoal grate in the midle, and as long as you don’t overfill that, it stays true to its word and the outside (the black bit) and the bottom don’t get hot. Very cool (ha).
I think I’ve cooked everything you can imagine on there – including (which will have to be a separate post) a rib of beef with I think 3 ribs (might have been two, can’t remember, either way it was BIG).
So enough already, let’s see some food!
So I’m sure you can see from the above… I make NO compromises when camping.
I’m actually due to go camping for nearly 2 weeks straight soon – I can tell you – that little Cobb is going to be used a LOT.
And – it has one other little perk. This is almost certainly against all recommended instruction, and I have overloaded it and melted one of the sides (so be warned) – but…
It made a good little fire pit for many of the evenings. Toasting marshmallows, keeping warm, it was a real winner.
So, I highly recommend it! You can find it on Amazon here!
